PTSD Therapy in Toronto

After a traumatic experience, it’s normal to feel shaken for a while. For some people, though, the reactions don’t fade. Memories intrude without warning, sleep is disrupted, and everyday life shrinks around avoiding reminders. This may be post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and evidence-based therapy can help.

Kalm Wellness Therapy offers PTSD therapy at our North York office on Lawrence Avenue West and through secure online sessions for clients across Canada.

Who PTSD therapy is for

PTSD can develop after directly experiencing or witnessing events such as:

  • Car accidents and other motor vehicle collisions
  • Physical or sexual assault
  • Workplace injuries or critical incidents
  • Medical emergencies, difficult births or reproductive trauma
  • Abuse in a relationship, including narcissistic or antagonistic abuse
  • The sudden or violent death of someone close
  • Childhood abuse, ongoing violence or war and displacement

You don’t need a formal diagnosis to reach out. If something that happened still feels as if it’s happening now, it’s worth talking about.

Common signs of PTSD

  • Re-experiencing: flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive memories, or intense reactions to reminders
  • Avoidance: staying away from places, people, conversations or feelings linked to the event
  • Changes in thoughts and mood: guilt, shame, blame, numbness, or feeling detached or unsafe
  • Feeling on alert: jumpiness, irritability, trouble concentrating or difficulty sleeping

These reactions are the mind and body trying to protect you. Therapy helps them settle so you can feel more like yourself again.

Approaches we use

Our PTSD therapists use several evidence-based and trauma-informed approaches, chosen with you:

  • Exposure therapy for PTSD: Prolonged Exposure, offered by Kayla Schofield, helps you gradually and safely approach trauma memories and avoided situations, so they lose some of their power.
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT): this approach identifies and reworks “stuck points”, the beliefs about safety, trust, blame and control that formed after the trauma.
  • EMDR: reprocesses distressing memories using bilateral stimulation, including R-TEP and G-TEP protocols for more recent events.
  • Polyvagal-informed therapy and DBT skills: these help settle the nervous system and manage intense emotions.
  • IFS and trauma-informed care: gentle work with protective responses, especially for complex or relational trauma.

For more on EMDR and broader trauma support, see our Trauma Therapy & EMDR page.

What sessions involve

Your first sessions focus on safety and understanding: what happened (only as much as you want to share), how symptoms affect your life now, and what you’d like to be different. Your therapist will explain the treatment options and help you choose one that fits. Most PTSD therapy starts by building grounding and coping skills. Trauma-focused work happens at a pace you agree to, with regular check-ins, and you can slow down or pause at any point. Results vary from person to person, and your therapist will review progress with you along the way.
