Grief Counselling in Toronto

Grief is a natural response to loss, but that doesn’t make it easy. It can come in waves of sadness, anger, guilt, numbness or even relief, sometimes all in the same day. Friends may expect you to “move on” long before you’re ready. Grief counselling gives you a place to remember, feel and make sense of your loss without being rushed.

Kalm Wellness Therapy offers grief and bereavement counselling at our North York office and online for clients across Canada.

Who grief counselling is for

Grief counselling is for anyone who is struggling with a loss, whether it’s recent or happened years ago. This includes the death of:

  • A partner, parent, child, sibling or friend
  • A pet
  • Someone you had a complicated or painful relationship with

Grief isn’t only about death. People also grieve:

  • The end of a relationship or marriage
  • Pregnancy loss or infertility
  • A health diagnosis or a change in what your body can do
  • Leaving a home, country, career or community
  • The life you expected to have

Signs you may want support

There’s no “right” way or timeline to grieve. You might reach out if you’re:

  • Finding it hard to function at work, school or home
  • Feeling stuck in shock, guilt, regret or anger
  • Avoiding reminders, or unable to think about anything else
  • Feeling isolated, or unsure how to talk about your loss
  • Coping with a sudden or traumatic death
  • Carrying grief alongside depression, anxiety or old losses

Approaches we use

Grief work is gentle and led by you. Our therapists may draw on:

  • Grief and bereavement therapy to understand your grief, honour your relationship with the person you lost and find ways to carry it forward
  • Narrative therapy to tell the story of your loss and of the person or life you are grieving
  • ACT and mindfulness to make room for painful feelings while staying connected to what matters
  • Trauma-informed approaches, and in some cases EMDR, when a loss was sudden, violent or traumatic
  • Client-centred and existential therapy for questions of meaning, identity and what comes next

What sessions involve

In your first session, you’re welcome to talk about the person or thing you’ve lost in whatever way feels right. You might share memories, the circumstances of the loss or how life has changed since. Your therapist will ask about your support system and how you’re coping with sleep, work and daily life. Over time, sessions might include working through difficult moments, finding ways to stay connected to who or what you lost, planning for hard dates like anniversaries and holidays, and slowly rebuilding routines. Grief counselling isn’t about “getting over it”. It’s about finding a way to live alongside your loss.
