Couples Counselling in Toronto

Every relationship goes through hard seasons. Maybe the same argument keeps coming back, you feel more like roommates than partners, or trust has been shaken. Couples counselling gives you both a neutral, supportive space to slow down, understand each other and decide together where you want the relationship to go.

Kalm Wellness Therapy offers couples counselling at our North York office and online for couples across Canada.

Who couples counselling is for

Couples counselling is for partners of any background, orientation or relationship stage who want to work on things together, whether you’ve been together a few months or several decades. You don’t need to be in crisis. Some couples come in to strengthen a good relationship before a big step like moving in, marriage or a new baby.

Common reasons couples reach out

  • Communication breakdowns, constant conflict or shutting down
  • Feeling emotionally distant or disconnected
  • Rebuilding trust after infidelity or broken agreements
  • Differences in parenting, finances, family roles or life goals
  • Intimacy concerns
  • Stress from life transitions such as a move, job loss, illness, immigration or becoming parents
  • Patterns from past relationships or past trauma showing up now
  • Deciding whether to stay together, or how to separate respectfully

Approaches we use

Our couples therapists draw from:

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to identify the cycle you get caught in and the needs and fears underneath it
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) to build on what’s already working and set clear, practical goals
  • CBT and communication skills for listening, expressing needs and repairing after conflict
  • Relational-cultural therapy, which looks at connection, power and the cultural context each partner brings
  • Narrative therapy and ACT to step back from blame and focus on shared values

What sessions involve

Most couples counselling is done with both partners in the room or on the call. The first session focuses on your story as a couple, what’s bringing you in now and what each of you hopes for. Your therapist stays neutral. Their role isn’t to decide who’s right but to help you both feel heard and to change the patterns that keep you stuck. Sessions often include practising new ways of talking with each other, and you might try small exercises at home. You can read more on our couples therapy page.

If there is violence or you don’t feel safe in your relationship, please tell your therapist privately, since couples sessions may not be the right fit. Individual support is available.
