Who depression counselling is for

You might consider counselling if, for weeks or longer, you have been:

  • Feeling down, empty, irritable or hopeless most days
  • Losing interest or pleasure in hobbies, people or work
  • Sleeping much more or much less than usual, or feeling tired all the time
  • Struggling to focus, make decisions or stay motivated
  • Pulling away from friends and family
  • Feeling worthless, guilty or very hard on yourself

Depression can look different from person to person. Some people keep functioning at work while feeling flat inside. Others notice it mainly as anger or burnout.

If you’re having thoughts of suicide or self-harm, please call or text 9-8-8 (Suicide Crisis Helpline) or go to your nearest emergency department. Therapy is a good next step once you’re safe.

Common reasons people reach out

Low mood often follows a loss, a breakup, a health diagnosis, job changes, isolation or long periods of stress. Sometimes there’s no obvious trigger, and that can feel confusing. People also seek help when low mood shows up alongside anxiety, grief, substance use, relationship strain or past trauma. Our therapists look at the whole picture, not just the symptoms.

Approaches we use

Counselling for depression is collaborative and tailored to you. Approaches our therapists use include:

  • CBT to recognise patterns of self-critical thinking and gradually rebuild routines and activities that support mood.
  • ACT to reconnect with your values and take small steps toward a meaningful life, even when motivation is low.
  • Psychodynamic and client-centred therapy to explore how past experiences and relationships shape how you feel today.
  • Narrative therapy to separate yourself from the problem and reclaim a fuller story of who you are.
  • Mindfulness-based approaches to notice difficult thoughts without getting stuck in them.
  • IFS to understand the parts of you that feel hopeless or critical.

What sessions involve

In early sessions your therapist will ask about your mood, sleep, energy, relationships and history, and about what you hope will be different. Together you’ll set realistic goals. Sessions are a space to talk openly, and they often include practical pieces too, such as planning small achievable activities, working with harsh self-talk or building a support plan. We work at your pace, and if your doctor is also involved in your care, you’re welcome to bring that into the conversation.
